When I first picked up this book I was excited (before I knew what it was about). I always enjoy reading from a males point of view because usually you get to understand the side of themselves that they don’t show to others. It feels like you’re apart of a secret. A few pages into the book and I asked myself “uh did i get the wrong book??”. It seemed like a huge jump going from these classic novels to something so modern but the more I think about it the more i see how they can be related. Throughout all of our books there has been recurring themes of abuse, feeling lost, death, inherited trauma, and etc. I think one of the reasons this book hits hard is because it is in a language that is simple for us to understand fully and completely. In my town, I have encountered a lot of people like Yunior. I don’t judge but I feel sympathetic towards them. Do I think abuse is okay, absolutely not, there is no excuse for such behavior. Often times I imagine how these people could’ve been if they had the right guidance. I am able to see the good in them but how much can one help if they do not see the goodness within themselves? As I was reading I felt sad for Yunior because I see that good in him but he internalizes all of his inherited trauma and tends to take it out on others. The more I read the more I start to dislike Yunior or maybe more so his actions and words.
